More than 50 homeless youth in Windsor received housing support thanks to a provincial grant awarded to the Windsor Residence for Young Men (WRYM)

Local MPPs Andrew Dowie (PC – Windsor-Tecumseh) and Lisa Gretzky (NDP – Windsor West) met with the team at WRYM on Wednesday to discuss the $152,800 Resilient Communities Fund grant they received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

“The WRYM continues to impress me with its invaluable work with youth who identify as male as they leave homelessness behind and rebuild their lives,” said Gretzky. “These youth are often victims of abuse, neglect, or family violence. Some are in recovery from substance use disorders.”

The grant allowed WRYM to hire staff to establish a system navigation support and life skill teaching program for homeless youth.

In the past two years, over 50 homeless youth received support through the System Navigation project, with the majority being able to find some form of sustainable housing.

“It is important to remember that these young men are victims of violence, abuse, and neglect of the worse kind,” said WRYM executive director Jason Weinberg. “Over 85 per cent of our clients reported being victims of family violence and abuse last year.

“With the OTF’s help, we were able to provide these young people with the life-skills, housing, and supports needed to ensure a successful transition into adulthood. WYRM has to be the health family they don’t have.”

Youth participating in the System Navigation project were able to continue school, reach employment goals, and find permanent housing in the private market or with family.
