The Ultimate Edition released on September 6, 2019

We’ve already talked about Starfield’s one-year anniversary today, but Gears 5 is celebrating one as well!
It was back on September 6, 2019 that players were first introduced to Gears 5 as part of the game’s Ultimate Edition, although the full release wouldn’t occur until a few days later. It had been three years since Gears of War 4 at the time, and incredibly only six years since Judgment. To put that into context, when Gears of War: E-Day hopefully comes out next year, it will have been six years since Gears 5 released in September 2019! Time’s scary, huh?
Anyway, Gears 5 was a pretty big success with the critics, scoring an 84 for Xbox One on average, and even the user score on the platform is a very respectable 8.2. Not everyone loved the direction of the narrative, but the gameplay was (and remains) highly enjoyable, while the free Xbox Series X and S upgrade gave it new life back in late 2020.
These days, Gears 5 isn’t exactly on life support but it’s also not getting much attention, although we assume it’ll pick up in popularity again as we approach the release of E-Day. Therefore, we think it’s a good time to step back and analyse Gears 5 as a whole – where does it rank for you in the list of Gears games, and are you still enjoying it five years later?
