Codenames, the hit board game, is coming to iOS and Android this month

  • Hit board game Codenames is finally coming to mobile
  • Get it September 12th on iOS and Android
  • Codenames pits two teams of agents against one another to discover all their field agents

Codenames, the hit board game from Czech developers, er, Czech Games Edition, is coming to mobile! The game, which has been the recipient of multiple awards including the prestigious Spiel Des Jahres, will be available on September 12th on iOS and Android. But what is Codenames all about, and how does it work? Let’s find out!

Codenames is, put simply, a guessing game. Obviously trying to condense an entire board game into a paragraph is difficult, but essentially it’s the job of two teams of agents (managed by spymasters) to select from a grid of words which they believe are the titular codenames of agents, bystanders or otherwise. Spymasters can offer clues, but it’s up to the agents themselves to figure out what words their spymaster is hinting at and avoid picking either bystanders, enemy agents or the deadly assassin.

For example: The Spymaster says ‘Tree’, which relates to the codenames of ‘nut’ and ‘bark’ (since these are both related to trees). Whichever team manages to cover all their cards and figure out which is which first wins the game. Unless, of course, they touch the assassin card.

Of course, that’s the broad strokes, but there’s a reason Codenames is so popular, and it’s that it hits the fine point of being simple yet addictive. Bringing it to mobile has been a long time coming, but we’re excited to see how Codenames does when it releases September 12th for Google Play and the iOS App Stores.
